About the Book

This sumptuous volume of photographs, published on the occasion of Mstislav Rostropovitch's eightieth birthday, is an intimate look at one of the most influential and enduring figures in twentieth-century classical music. Rostropovich, born in 1927, entered the Moscow Conservatory at 16, where he studied composition with Prokofiev and Shostakovich and practiced the cello intensely. He was still a teenager when he won the gold medal in his country's first competition for young musicians, in 1945, and became one of the central figures of the USSR's musical culture. Eventually, as international recording contracts and foreign tours brought him to the attention of western listeners, controversy also attracted the attention of Soviet authorities: From 1969 until 1974 Rostropovich and his wife, the soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, supported the banned novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn, not only by allowing him to live in their dacha outside Moscow but by writing an open letter to Brezhnev protesting Soviet restrictions on cultural freedom. These high-profile actions eventually resulted in the cancellation of the couple's concerts and tours, the cessation of their recording projects and a Soviet media blackout. In 1974, they were finally granted exit visas, allowing them to go into exile. Four years later they were stripped of Soviet citizenship. That decree held until 1990, when Rostropovich toured Russia with the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington. Since he emigrated to the U.S., Rostropovich has become one of the world's leading and best-loved conductors, and he remains a potent symbol of the times through which he has lived.
