La tapisserie datant du gothique tardif acquise par le Musee du Louvre en 2010 peut etre attribuee a Charles VII si l'on en croit les symboles qui y figurent: soleil et fleurs de lys, emblemes de la royaute francaise. Il est tres probable qu'il faille situer sa production en Flandre autour de 1453-1461 en raison des evenements historiques de l'epoque. Les comparaisons de style avec l'enluminure et la peinture contemporaine suggerent que sa conception a pu voir le jour dans le cercle des artistes qui gravitaient autour de Jean Fouquet, lequel est l'auteur d'un portrait important de Charles VII, egalement conserve au Louvre. L'occupation de la France par les Anglais pendant la guerre de Cent Ans empecha le dauphin d'acceder au trone a la mort de son pere Charles VI et les tenants du parti adverse ne se priverent pas de tourner en ridicule son titre de Roi de Bourges. Ce n'est qu'en 1429 qu'il fut enfin couronne a Reims sous l'impulsion de Jeanne d'Arc. Le sacre du roi prepara le chemin a la liberation definitive de la France. Cependant Charles VII aurait ete incapable de pacifier son pays et d'en maintenir l'unite, s'il n'avait pu compter sur la loyaute et l'aide materielle de son entourage. La prise en compte de l'atmosphere qui regnait a la cour permet de mieux cerner le comportement du roi dans ses relations avec les autres et de comprendre dans une certaine mesure sa mentalite avec les forces et les faiblesses de son caractere. Il fallut attendre jusqu'a 1453 pour que fut officiellement conclue la paix avec l'Angleterre. C'est selon toute vraisemblance entre cette derniere date et celle de la mort du roi en 1461 que fut realisee la tapisserie qui vient d'entrer au Louvre. Ce dossier de trone illustre la revendication du roi de France a la legitimite et il souligne son statut perpetuel en tant que souverain de droit divin.
