Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1, Universität Wien (Deutsche Philologie), Veranstaltung: BA SEMINAR, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "Entsetzlich" nannte Thomas Mann das Stück "Penthesilea" und sprach damit nur das Offensichtlichste aus. Schon Kleist selber schrieb in einem Brief, dass es zwangsläufig Entsetzen hervorrufen müsse und genau dies ist auch das Wort, das die Oberpriesterin ausruft, als sie vom kannibalistischen Blutrausch der Amazonenkönigin Penthesilea erfährt. Entsetzen ist also nicht nur das Leitmotiv der Rezeption des Stückes, angefangen bei Goethe, dem es Kleist zu Füßen legte und der sich schaudernd abwandte, es ist auch ein immanentes Motiv des Stückes selbst. Doch was geht da vor? Was ist das für eine Dynamik, die hier in Gang gesetzt wird und solch Entsetzen auslöst? Kleists 1806/1807 entstandenes Drama ist ein gesellschaftskritisches Stück. Er zeigt exemplarisch anhand der Protagonistin Penthesilea, wie unvereinbar staatliches Pflichtbewusstsein mit Individualität sein kann. Penthesileas ausbrechender persönlicher innerer Konflikt wird durch das System ihres Amazonenstaates ausgelöst. Aus der Konfrontation der natürlichen Gefühle mit der kollektiven Ordnung entsteht das Tragische. Bis heute ist rätselhaft, ob der Trojanische Krieg so stattfand, wie ihn Homer schildert oder ob es das Volk der Amazonen tatsächlich gegeben hat. Wahrscheinlich ist, dass es sich dabei um eine Essenz aus Geschichten und Konstellationen handelt, die so oder so ähnlich tatsächlich zu verschiedenen Zeiten und sich gewissermaßen zu mythischen Geschichten kristallisiert haben.
