Die vorliegende Arbeit hat ihren Ursprung in einem empirischen For- schungspraktikum, das unter der Leitung der Verfasser im Sommerse- mester 1992 und im Wintersemester 1992/93 an der Universität zu Köln durchgefuhrt wurde. Ziel dieses Praktikums war die Unter- suchung der Effekte christlicher Religiosität auf die sozialen Beziehungen und Netzwerke von Menschen. Es sollte geprüft werden, ob religiöse Menschen sich durch andere Arten sozialer Beziehungen und eine andere Netzwerkstruktur auszeichnen als nicht-religiöse Menschen. Allgemein wurde angenommen, daß die christlichen Wert- vorstellungen und Verhaltensvorschriften einen Gegentrend zu der im Zuge der Modernisierung von Gesellschaften immer wieder behaup- teten Zunahme rein zweckrationaler Beziehungen, Vereinsamung und sozialer Isolierung darstellen. Im Verlauf der näheren theoretischen Ausarbeitung des Themas kamen wir zusehends auf weitere Forschungsfragen, deren Analyse ebenfalls lohnenswert erschien. Diese im F orschungsprozeß gene- rierten inhaltlichen Problemstellungen betrafen vornehmlich religions- soziologische Aspekte. Sie richteten sich u.a. auf die sozio- demographischen Korrelate der Religiosität, die Beziehung von Religion und Kirche, die Funktion von Religion in der Moderne, den Prozeß der Säkularisierung, den Stellenwert religiös und konfessionell homogener Milieus und die Tradierung religiöser Glaubensinhalte.
