Zuerst einmal gibt es Autoren, welche die Haltung Büchners gegenüber der Religion, auch speziell im Lenz, nicht als kritisch einschätzen. Horst Oppel zum Beispiel deutet die Figur Lenz als Exempel für die Folgen des Religionsverlusts. Auch Wolfgang Martens und Wolfgang Wittowski sehen hinter dem Atheismus von Büchners Figuren die Sehnsucht nach einer neuen metaphysischen Geborgenheit. Einige Autoren sehen die mit christlichen Bildern angefüllte Sprache Büchners nicht als Ausdruck von Religiosität, sondern vielmehr als Ausdruck einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Religion. Jan Thorn-Prikker geht noch einen Schritt weiter und beleuchtet die Religionskritik im Lenz als Mittel zur Darstellung von Religion und Wirklichkeit. Dann folgen weitere Arbeiten, welche die Funktion und die besonderen Eigenheiten der Religionskritik im Lenz und anderen Werken Büchners herausarbeiten. Diese beziehen nun oft auch den zeitgeschichtlichen Kontext mit ein und arbeiten die Theodizee-Kritik als Kern von Büchners Religionskritik heraus. Aus dieser Gruppe heben sich einige Autoren durch einen besonderen Schwerpunkt hervor. Da ist Klaus Gille, der den Begriff des Weltrisses im Zusammenhang mit der Theodizee-Kritik näher beleuchtet. Dann Hermann Kurzke, der sich von den anderen unterscheidet, da er Büchner nicht so sehr als Atheist, sondern eher als kritisch denkender Christ verstanden wissen will. Außerdem gibt es noch Seiji Osawa und Michael Glebke8, die den Schwerpunkt auf die Philosophie legen und Büchners Religionskritik im Kontext seiner philosophischen Studien herausarbeiten.
