About the Book

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2,0, Pädagogische Hochschule Weingarten, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "Der Untergang des Hauses Usher", so die deutsche Übersetzung des englischen Originaltextes, welcher erstmalig im September des Jahres 1839 in Burton's Gentleman's Magazine (vgl. Krupat & Levine, 2007, S. 1553) erschienen ist, ist eine Kurzgeschichte des US-amerikanischen Schriftstellers Edgar Allan Poe, welche sämtliche Elemente des Schauerromans beinhaltet. Sie handelt von einem namenlosen Erzähler, welcher von dem mysteriösen Haus und dessen geisteskranken Bewohner Roderick Usher nach und nach vereinnahmt wird und letztlich selbst in den Wahnsinn getrieben wird, als das Imperium Usher in sich zusammenfällt. Meine persönliche Motivation zur Analyse dieses Werkes ergibt sich aus meinem generellen Interesse an der US-amerikanischen Literatur. Diese habe ich während meines Auslandssemesters an einer Universität in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika kennen und zugleich schätzen gelernt. Hierbei hat mich Edgar Allan Poe besonders fasziniert, da seine Dichtung und seine Kurzgeschichten zwar häufig verwirrend und folglich bei der ersten Lektüre nur selten verständlich sind. Aber gerade diese Tatsache macht seine Literatur auch so lesenswert und spannend und hat ihn zu einem der herausragenden Autoren des 19. Jahrhunderts gemacht. So ist es auch sehr interessant, dass er den Großteil seines Ruhms erst lange nach seinem Tode erlangt hat, als seine Texte zahlreiche Autoren in den verschiedensten Ländern inspiriert haben. Eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit zu dem deutschen Autor E.T.A. Hoffmann ist nicht mehr zu leugnen und ein weiterer Grund dafür, dass ich mich für die Analyse eines seiner Texte entschlossen habe.
