Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2001 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 1,5, Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, Veranstaltung: Anglistik Literaturwissenschaft: Percy Bysshe Shelley, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Ich werde zunächst etwas weiter ausholen, um den Hintergrund deutlich zu machen, vor dem Shelleys Blankversdichtung Alastor geschrieben wurde. Der literaturhistorische Begriff des romantic movement wird im "Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (SOECD)" definiert als "die Bewegung in der Literatur (und der Kunst), die aus einer Auflehnung gegen die Formalitäten und Konventionen des Klassizismus entstand und im 19. Jahrhundert durch bewußte Beschäftigung mit den subjektiven und imaginativen Aspekten der Natur und des Lebens charakterisiert war". Wenn man den Beginn und das Ende der romantischen Periode in England politisch definieren will, muß das Jahr 1789 als Start dieser Epoche angesehen werden, da in Frankreich eine Revolution stattfand, welche die Ideale der Freiheit, der Gleichheit und der Brüderlichkeit schuf, die sich die englischen Romantiker danach auf ihre Fahne schrieben, um durch sie eine bessere Gesellschaft in der politischen Form einer demokratischen Republik zu erschaffen, die wie in Frankreich die konstitutionelle Monarchie ablösen sollte. Es gibt jedoch auch andere wissenschaftliche Stimmen, welche die Meinung vertreten, schon das Jahr 1776 mit der amerikanischen declaration of independence, politischen Unruhen in England und den Kolonialkriegen sei der Auslöser für die Literatur der Romantiker gewesen. Mit der großen englischen Wahlrechtsreform von 1832, die eine neue bürgerlich-demokratische Ära einleitete, ging diese grosse lyrische Epoche zu Ende, die "in Wucht und Wirkung [mit] der großen Zeit des [elisabethanischen] Dramas" vergleichbar ist. Betrachtet man die Zeitspanne unter Berücksichtigung der literarischen Veröffentlichungen der Vertreter dieser Epoche, so startet die englische Romantik ebenfalls im Jahre 1789 mit W
