Allein dieser Satz macht deutlich, dass das Vorwort als Kampfansage gegen die etablierten literarischen Normen und Regeln der Klassik verstanden werden kann. Wie auch schon im Preface de Cromwell (1827), fordert Hugo die Ablosung des klassischen Dramas durch eine neue Art der Dramaturgie: "Liberalismus meint fur den Dramatiker Hugo die Freiheit der Stoffwahl im historisch-politischen Bereich, Entgrenzung des Wortschatzes und freiere Metrik" (Engler 2003: 141). Die Urauffuhrung Hernanis am 25. Februar 1830 in der Comedie Francaise markiert somit die Entstehung des romantischen Dramas: Die Originalitat der Dramaturige Hugos ist Ausdruck einer innovativen Asthetik, die kennzeichnend fur die Romantik ist und sich ganz allgemein als Abkehr von der klassischen Doktrin (l'abandon de la doctrine classique) definieren lasst. Ausgehend von diesem Ansatz beschaftigt sich die vorliegende Arbeit zunachst mit den Unterscheiden zwischen klassischem und romantischem Drama, um im Anschluss daran zu zeigen, wie Hernani als Prototyp des romantischen Dramas den Forderungen der romantischen Asthetik gerecht wird und daher oft als Symbol der Uberwindung des klassischen Dramas bezeichnet wird.
