Er stammte aus Vivar del Cid bei Burgos und wurde am Hof zusammen mit dem sp teren K nig Sacho II. von Kastilien (gest. 1072) erzogen. Bei den K mpfen zwischen den Br dern Sancho II. und Alfons VI. der Tapfere (1049-1109) diente Rodrigo als Feldherr. Wegen seiner Erfolge verlieh man Rodrigo den ehrenvollen Beinamen "El Campeador" ("Schlachtensieger"). Nach der Ermordung von Sancho II. wurde Rodrigo Gefolgsmann von Alfons VI., der nach 1072 K nig von L on und Kastilien war. 1081 verbannte ihn der K nig, als er zu m chtig werden drohte. Als Verbannter diente Rodrigo dem Maurenf rsten von Saragoza, den er auch gegen christliche Angriffe verteidigte, nicht aber gegen Alfons VI., dem er sich weiterhin zur Lehnstreue verpflichtet f hlte. In seinen K mpfen erwarb sich Rodrigo gro en Ruhm und seinen Ehrennamen "El Cid," der vom arabischen Begriff "Sayyid" ("Herr") abgeleitet ist. Nach einer vor bergehenden Auss hnung 1086 verlieh K nig Alfons VI. dem Cid alle Gebiete, die dieser im Osten Spaniens erobert hatte. 1094 eroberte der Cid das maurische Valencia, das er bis zu seinem Tod am 10. Juni 1099 gegen die nordafrikanischen Amoraviden behauptete. Laut Legende griffen die Mauren sofort Valencia an, als sie vom Tod des Cid erfuhren. Aber die Christen banden den Leichnam auf ein Pferd und f hrten es voran in die Schlacht, worauf die entsetzten Mauren angeblich Rei aus nahmen, weil sie den Cid noch am Leben w hnten. Der Ruf der Unbesiegbarkeit des Cid hatte dazu gef hrt, dass er sogar noch nach seinem Ableben eine Schlacht gewann. Seine Gattin Jimena herrschte drei weitere Jahre ber Valencia, bevor dieses wieder f r mehr als ein Jahrhundert lang in die H nde der Mauren fiel.
