In der folgenden Arbeit wird uber Kannibalen gesprochen. Ein Thema, dass den heutigen Mitteleuropaer wohl kaum personlich betreffen durfte. Dennoch ubt die Vorstellung, dass Menschen ihre eigenen Artgenossen als Speise benutzen, offenbar eine grosse Faszination aus, denn das Thema zieht sich durch die gesamte Menschheitsgeschichte. Man mag bei den homerischen Kyklopen beginnen, die den volligen Mangel an Zivilisation verkorpern, indem sie Menschen verzehren. Derselbe Vorwurf traf fruhe romische Christen ebenso wie vermeintliche Hexen und Werwolfe im Mittelalter. Auch der Glaube an Vampire stellt eine Form der Anthropophagie dar, und seit Beginn der 1990er lehrt uns der intellektuelle Menschenfresser Hannibal Lecter aus Thomas Harris Roman 'The Silence of the Lambs' mit seinen beruhmten Worten 'I'm having an old friend for dinner' das Furchten. Der Vorwurf des Menschenessens kann fur eine Person oder eine Gruppe schlimme Konsequenzen haben, wie man an verleumdeten und gepeinigten Hexen im Mittelalter sieht. Das macht den Vorwurf dann auch zu einem Instrument gegen unliebsame Elemente, denn wer erst einmal mit einem solchen Vorwurf belastet ist, der wird sich mit seiner Verteidigung schwer tun. Auch ist es beispielsweise nicht angenehm fur heutige Volker, sich anhoren zu mussen, ihre Vorfahren seien Kannibalen gewesen. Eben dieser Vorwurf wurde auch zu Beginn der Entdeckung des amerikanischen Kontinents, von vielen Reiseberichterstattern an die dortigen Ureinwohner gerichtet. In den Schriften, die nach und nach in Europa publiziert wurden, tauchen die Menschenfresser immer wieder auf. Zu diesen Schriften zahlt auch die 'Wahrhaftige Historia', die der hessische Reisende Hans Staden 1557 veroffentlichte. Thema dieser Arbeit wird sein, diesen Text kritisch zu behandeln, und durch eine Sichtung der Bucher seiner Vorganger zu zeigen, dass mit Hans Stadens Bericht ein konstruiertes Werk vorliegt. Durch eine Beurteilung der Rolle seines Korrektors Dr. Dryander und die reformatorischen Einflusse auf den Hessen, soll gezeigt werden, dass die 'Wahrhaftige Historia' nicht als Beweis fur den Kannibalismus brasilianischer Eingeborener herangezogen werden kann. Die wichtigste Literatur fur diese Arbeit stammt von Annerose Menninger, die ebenso wie Urs Bitterli und William Arens zu den Vertretern der Wissenschaft gehort, die den Kannibalismus nicht als bewiesen ansehen. Menningers Arbeit, 'Die Macht der Augenzeugen', stellt das zentrale Werk in dieser Arbeit dar. [...
