England unter der Herrschaft von Konigin Viktoria, das ist die Zeit des einflussreichen Empires, des durch die Industrielle Revolution erlangten Reichtums und den wissenschaftlichen Errungenschaften. Es ist aber auch eine Zeit - imfin de siecle- des Umbruchs und des langsamen Zerfalls. Die 'Great Depression' (Manfred Pfister 121), die das Land in eine Krise sturzt, fuhrt zu Missstanden und Arbeitslosigkeit, das Ende einer Wohlstandsgesellschaft ist nah. Die Wissenschaft nimmt den Viktorianern mit Darwin und dessen Entdeckung der animalischen Herkunft des Menschen den Glauben an Gott und versetzt sie mit Lombroso und seiner Kriminalanthropologie in Panik. Die Psychologie und Psychiatrie, die sich zu dieser Zeit noch in den 'Kinderschuhen' befindet, stort durch ihre Entdeckung von Geisteskrankheiten wie Hysterie und Personlichkeitsspaltung die von den Viktorianern propagierte Einheit von Korper und Seele (Pfister 88). Der Asthetizismus dieser Zeit fluchtet sich in eine schone Scheinwelt, welche die miserablen Zustande der Gesellschaft einfach ausblendet (ibid. 119-127). Die Viktorianer desfin de sieclesind nun nicht mehr so fortschrittsdenkend; sie haben Angst vor dem Zerfall ihrer Kultur, ihrer Rasse und ihren Institutionen (Patrick Brantlinger 187). Die selbst auferlegten hohen Moralstandards, die die Viktorianer dazu zwingen, auf der einen Seite ihre Sexualitat einzuschranken, bringt sie auf der anderen Seite, diese heimlich auszuleben, ein Doppelleben zu fuhren (Astrid Schmid 43). Vordergrundig ist man der gutsituierte Gentleman - Frauen haben offiziell keine sexuellen Gefuhle -, hintergrundig suchte man seine Abenteuer in sexuellen Ausschweifungen (Pfister 127-138). Die Angste und Befurchtungen der Viktorianer finden Ausdruck in denfin de siecle Gothic novels- David Punter bezeichnet sie als die ''decadent Gothic'' (239)-, die sich alle mit dem 'problem of degeneration, and thus [with] the essence of the human' (Punter 239) auseinandersetzen.
