Kleist, ein viel diskutierter, jedoch auch oft in Frage gestellter Autor. Er war bei seinen Zeitgenossen gleichermassen beliebt wie verhasst. Doch wer war er, und was hat ihn bewegt, ein solches Stuck wie seine einzige Idylle zu schreiben? Dies sind alles Fragen, die im Laufe dieser Arbeit geklart werden sollen. Beginnen mochte ich mit einem kurzen Biographie- und Zeitgeschichtsausschnitt, um die damalig vorherrschende Situation darzustellen und somit vielleicht ein wenig Licht in das Dunkel von Kleists Beweggrunden zu bringen. Kleist stiess auf Verstandnislosigkeit bei grossen Dichtern wie z. B. Goethe, da er keiner der damaligen Dichterschulen wie Klassik oder Romantik zuzuordnen war. Man begrundete dies damit, das manche seiner Werke seelische Tiefen aufwuhlten, die erst ein Jahrhundert spater durch Sigmund Freud erforscht wurden. Sein Militardienst erschien ihm als' lebendiges Monument der Tyrannei'. 1801 geriet er in eine tiefe innere Krise: er sah in der Anstellung beim Staat keinen Sinn und sagte: 'Ich soll tun was der Staat von mir verlangt, und doch soll ich nicht untersuchen, ob das, was er von mir verlangt, gut ist. Zu seinem unbekannten Zwecken soll ich blosses Werkzeug sein- ich kann es nicht ( Brief an seine Braut Wilhelmine von Zenge). Hinzu, dass das Studium Kants ihn am Sinn der Wissenschaften und der Suche nach Wahrheit uberhaupt verzweifeln liess. Die zeitgenossische Philosophie schenkte der Literatur eine neue, tiefere Auffassung von der Bedeutung der Personlichkeit, nachdem sie das Subjekt in den Mittelpunkt der Erkenntnis geruckt hatte. Sie vermittelte einen neuen Begriff sittlicher Ordnung, der auf der Einsicht in das Wesen der Sittlichkeit, frei vom Zwang vorgegebener Gebote ruhte. ' Handle so, dass die Maxime deines Willens jederzeit zugleich als Prinzip einer allgemeinen Gesetzgebung gelten konnte' nach Kant. So wurde der Idealismus zum neuen Eckstein des Humanismus. Er fluchtete daraufhin nach Paris. Wenig spater wollte er sich seine eigene Idylle als Bauer aufbauen, was jedoch dazu fuhrte, dass seine Verlobung aufgrund des unstandesgemassen Lebenswandels in die Bruche ging. Seine Ziele hatten sich geandert und er beschloss nun Dichter zu werden.Gessner, Zoschke und und Wieland, seine Berner Freunde unterstutzten ihn darin
