Die Bildung von Allianzen hat den Luftverkehr der vergangenen Jahre gepragt. Durch die Liberalisierung des vergangenen Jahrzehnts wurde einerseits den Fluggesellschaften mehr Handlungsspielraum gewahrt, andererseits aber auch durch eine deutliche Intensivierung des Wettbewerbs ihre angestammte Position aufgeweicht. Die Bildung der globalen Allianzen ist nun die Antwort insbesondere der etablierten, ehemals nationalen Fluggesellschaften auf diese Entwicklung. Wahrend in anderen Branchen die Globalisierung in weltweit aktiven Unternehmen, gebildet durch Aufkaufe und Fusionen globalen Massstabs, erkennbar wird, zeigt sich die Tendenz der Globalisierung im Luftverkehr in der Formung globaler Netze mittels der strategischen Planung und Bildung horizontaler (vgl. Kap.4.3.1) strategischer Allianzen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit sollen die wirtschaftlichen Grunde und die grundsatzliche Erfolgsvoraussetzungen bzw. Erfolgsfaktoren von strategischen Allianzen erarbeitet werden. Um das Verstandnis zu erleichtern, wird, neben allgemeinen Erlauterungen und Ansatzen, der Arbeit eine gewisse Praxisrelevanz zu verleihen. Orientierung liefert, neben kleineren Beispielen, hauptsachlich der Bereich Luftverkehr mit seinem Erfolgsmodell 'Star Alliance'. Warum ist es beispielsweise fur die Lufthansa AG sinnvoll Mitglied der 'Star Alliance' zu sein?Um den Themenbereich 'strategische Allianzen' zu beleuchten, wird bewusst dieser Wirtschaftsbereich als Praxisbezug gewahlt. Grund dafur ist, dass vor allem der Luftverkehr zu den Schrittmachern der Globalisierung zahlt. Ohne die Luftfahrt ware diese kaum vorstellbar. Und gerade die Globalisierung ist es, die wiederum fur die Tendenz zu strategischen Allianzen verantwortlich ist. Als Voruberlegung der Arbeit wird in Kapitel zwei auf die Begrifflichkeit strategischer Allianzen eingegangen. Abschnitt drei beschreibt die Grunde fur diese Kooperationsform. Im vierten Kapitel werden in Form eines Leitfadens wesentliche Erfolgsvoraussetzungen dargestellt, die notwendig fur den strategischen Erfolg einer derartigen Zusammenarbeit sind, bevor im funften Abschnitt abschliessend auf die 'Star Alliance' eingegangen wird. Da es sich im Luftfahrtsektor im Wesentlichen um global operierende strategische Allianzen handelt, ist im Verlauf dieser Arbeit sowohl von strategischer als auch von globaler Allianz die Rede.
