Goethes 'Torquato Tasso' gilt als erstes Kunstlerdrama der Weltliteratur. Nie zuvor ist die Existenzeines Kunstlercharakters als Grundgedanke einer dramatischen Dichtung problematisiert worden. 1Die neuartige Konzentration auf die Innerlichkeit und die damit einhergehende Armut an aussererHandlung rief unter den zeitgenossischen Kritikern bei aller Anerkennung auch tadelnde Tonehervor. So kommt ein Rezensent der Leipziger 'Neuen Bibliothek der schonen Wissenschaften' imJahre 1790, also ein Jahr nach der Drucklegung zu dem Ergebnis, 'Torquato Tasso' sei keineigentliches 'Drama in Aristoteles' Sinn', sondern 'nichts weiter [...] als eine dramatischeSchilderung eines Charakters'. 2 Neben der Konzentration auf die Innerlichkeit des Protagonisten ist die zeitliche Situierung des Dramas von zentraler Bedeutung. Es ist, wie Borchmeyer formuliert, 'am fiktiven Schnittpunkt zweier Zeitalter angesiedelt.' Dabei entscheidend ist 'die Spannung zwischen der vo m asthetischenAutonomieprinzip bestimmten (burgerlichen) Poesie respektive Dichterexistenz und der (feudal-)hofischen Welt mit ihren spezifischen Anspruchen an die Kunste und den Kuns tler'.3Schon die altere Forschung, insbesondere die bedeutende Monographie von Wolfdietrich Rasch(1954) und die Tasso-Interpretation von Wilkinson (1962), hat Tasso als beispielhafte Dichterfigurgedeutet. Dabei versteht Rasch die Dichterkronung als eigentlichen Anstoss der dramatischenHandlung, die die 'ratselvolle, schwer durchschaubare' Problematik des Kunstlers und seinetragische Existenz veranschauliche.4 Hierbei aber wurde die Bedeutung der hofischen Umwelt mitihrer spezifischen Erwartungshaltung nicht ausreichend aufgearbeitet. Die Hofwelt erscheint nur alsHintergrund und Widerstand.5 Gerhard Kaiser (1977) stellt in seiner Studie erstmals den Konflikt von Dichter und Gesellschaft in den Mittelpunkt. Er greift dabei die von Rasch und Wilkinson vorgebrachten Deutungen Tassos auf, verfeinert sie aber, indem er Tasso nicht nur als paradigmatischen Dichter, sondern als einenspezifisch modernen Dichter versteht.
