Das Papstzeremoniell der Renaissance vereinigte kirchliche Liturgie, höfische Etikette und diplomatisches Protokoll. Durch die Verbindung von religiösen, repräsentativen und künstlerisch-ästhetischen Form- und Funktionselementen war es Ausdruck und Garant des geistlich-weltlichen Doppelcharakters der Papstmonarchie. Diese Arbeit widmet sich den Prinzipien, Aspekten, Trägern und Instrumenten der bislang nur ungenügend wahrgenommenen Zeremonialreform, die in den Pontifikaten von Innozenz VIII. bis Leo X. (1484-1521) erfolgte. Es ergibt sich der überraschende Befund, daß bereits vor dem Konzil von Trient eine umfassende schriftliche Kodifikation sämtlicher Zeremonien mit Blick auf deren performative Funktion und die in diesem Zusammenhang nunmehr zentrale Rolle der Musik vorgenommen wurde. Das Papstzeremoniell erhielt dabei zunächst eine eigene, speziell für die römische Renaissance charakteristische Gestalt, entwickelte sich dann aber in allen wesentlichen Fragen zur maßgeblichen Quelle für die jeweils spezifischen Traditionen von römischer Kurie und katholischer Weltkirche der gesamten Neuzeit.

Der Autor: Jörg Bölling, geboren 1974, studierte nach dem Kirchenmusikexamen ab 1993 Geschichte, Musikwissenschaft und Latein an der Universität Münster und der Università Ca' Foscari in Venedig. Die Promotion erfolgte 2004. Nach dem Staatsexamen 1999 war der Autor Stipendiat des Deutschen Historischen Instituts in Rom und des Münsteraner Graduiertenkollegs Gesellschaftliche Symbolik im Mittelalter, in dem er jetzt als Koordinator tätig ist.
