Seit 1980 erscheinen in Frankreich vermehrt literarische Texte über die Shoah, die von jüdischen Autorinnen und Autoren geschrieben wurden, die den Holocaust selbst nicht mehr bewusst erlebt haben, weil sie damals noch Kinder waren oder erst nach dem Krieg geboren wurden. In diesem Buch wird mit Werken von Régine Robin, Robert Bober, Patrick Modiano, Gérard Wajcman und Henri Raczymow eine repräsentative Auswahl an literarischen Texten der nachgeborenen Generation vorgestellt und auf ihre spezifischen Erzählweisen hin befragt und analysiert. Da sich die Bedeutung der Shoah für diese Autoren quasi im »Nicht-Erlebten« ermisst, ist die Erinnerung daran problematisch und erfordert neue Ausdrucksformen. Ausgehend von dieser Prämisse entwirft Birgit Schlachter eine literarische »Ästhetik der Abwesenheit«: Die Analysen der literarischen Werke werden in einen historisch-theoretischen Rahmen eingebettet, der die Themen »Trauma«, »Darstellung der Shoah«, »Autobiographie« sowie »Erinnerung« und »Identität« systematisch verfolgt und für die Textanalysen fruchtbar macht.
