Mit diesem Band legen die Editoren aus dem Kolner Albertus-Magnus-Institut, H. Anzulewicz und J.R. Soder, in der von Bernhard Geyer begrundeten Reihe Alberti Magni Opera Omnia die erste kritische, auf der Grundlage der uberlieferten, lateinischen Handschriften erstellte Textausgabe der anthropologischen Fruhschrift De homine ("Uber den Menschen") des Doctor universalis (1280) vor. Das undatierte, wohl in den 1240er Jahren redigierte, monumentale Werk umfasst in dieser kritischen Grossquart-Ausgabe fast 600 Textseiten. Bei diesem bisher wenig beachteten Text handelt sich um einen eigenstandigen Teil einer grosseren schopfungstheologischen Summe, die den Menschen in seiner seelisch-korperlichen Verfasstheit, in seinem Urzustand und in seinem naturlichen Lebensraum zum Gegenstand hat. Sowohl der theologische als auch der philosophische Blick auf den Menschen macht diesen vordergrundig vom seelischen Prinzip her begreifbar. Erst im zweiten Schritt sollen ihre Eigenschaften und Ursachen untersucht werden, da auf diesem Weg die Vermogen und Funktionen der Seele erkannt werden. Albert hebt in diesem Zusammenhang hervor, dass die Seele nicht nur das Lebens- und Erkenntnisprinzip des Korpers ist, sondern dass sie den belebten Korper in seinem naturlichen Sein und seiner ihn bestimmenden Wesenheit konstituiert. Die Bedeutung des Werkes und damit auch ihres Autors fur die abendlandische Geistesgeschichte hat L. Honnefelder treffend hervorgehoben, indem er schrieb: "Noch bevor Albert seine umfassende und im lateinischen Westen epochemachende Kommentierung der Schritt fur Schritt wieder bekannt gewordenen Werke des Aristoteles beginnt, unternimmt er in De homine am Thema des Menschen den Versuch, der ihn zur Schlusselgestalt in der Konfrontation zwischen der christlichen Glaubenslehre und der antiken Philosophie und ihren judischen und islamischen Weiterfuhrungen werden lasst, namlich den Anspruch des philosophischen Denkens unverkurzt aufzunehmen, ihn jedoch zugleich und vorbehaltlos den neuen Fragen im Horizont des christlichen Glaubens auszusetzen". Der Textedition schickt H. Anzulewicz die umfangreichen Prolegomena voraus, in denen solche Fragen zum Werk wie Authentizitat, Titel, literarische Art, Datierung, handschriftliche Uberlieferung und fruhere Druckausgaben, Textgeschichte und -kritik sowie Grundsatze und Anlage dieser Edition erortert werden. Im Editionsteil wird am Fuss jeder zweispaltigen Textseite eine Siglenzeile mit Siglen der Handschriften beigegeben, die bei der Textrekonstruktion verwendet wurden, ferner zwei getrennte Apparate: ein textkritischer Apparat und ein Quellen- und Similienapparat. Das Werk wird durch mehrfache Indizes (Loci Sacrae Scripturae, Auctores ab Alberto ipso allegati, Auctores a nobis allegati, Index rerum et vocabulorum, Index nominum, Index codicum et manuscriptorum) erschlossen und mit einem Literaturverzeichnis sowie einer Synopse aller Druckausgaben des Werkes abgerundet.
