Anstelle von "edler Einfalt und stiller Größe" erblickten Reisende jedoch eine Stadt kleiner, arabesk verzierter Gebäude mit fensterlosen, nicht selten obszön ausgeschmückten Räumen. Ihre Berichte ringen um einen Ausgleich mit dem klassizistischen Antikebild.
