Physiognomik gilt als eine obsolete esoterische Disziplin, deren Bedeutung sich für die Kunstgeschichte darauf beschränkt, Porträts und Ausdrucksstudien in ihrem historischen Kontext zu verstehen. Sie muss jedoch als ein grundlegendes methodisches Vorbild der kunsthistorischen Forschung verstanden werden. Nicht nur in der Entstehungsphase des Faches um 1800, vor allem im frühen 20. Jahrhundert durchziehen physiognomische Denkfiguren nahezu alle relevanten methodischen Ansätze. Namhafte Kunsthistoriker wie Heinrich Wölfflin, Wilhelm Pinder, Hans Sedlmayr oder Wilhelm Fraenger bezogen sich auf die Methode der Physiognomik, um aus der äußeren Form auf das verborgene Innere des Kunstwerks zu schließen. So wurde der Charakter des Werks, des Künstlers oder auch von Volk, Nation und Rasse bestimmt. Diese 'physiognomische' Fähigkeit der Kunstgeschichte, das Sichtbare zu deuten, machte sie zu einer Leitwissenschaft für viele andere Disziplinen wie die Psychologie und die Rassenforschung, die häufig selbst auf der Physiognomik beruhten. Zugleich dienten diese dazu, der Kunstgeschichte ein anthropologisches Fundament zu verleihen. Physiognomik erweist sich so als eine Bildwissenschaft, die nicht nur für die Entwicklung der kunsthistorischen Methodik von größter Bedeutung war, sondern auch bei den aktuellen Bemühungen um eine Aufwertung des Bildes eine Rolle spielt.
