Comment echapper aux Nazis ? En 1940, depuis l'Armistice du 22 juin, la France est occupee et la guerre bat son plein. Bientot la population voyant la Wehrmacht installer sa toute-puissance au Nord echafaude spontanement des plans pour faire passer la ligne de demarcation a des hommes, des femmes, des enfants en danger et ainsi leur permettre de rejoindre la zone libre. Mais au-dela, comment rallier un pays sur ? Grace au courage de civils, de resistants ou simples bonnes ames locales, des centaines de personnes, militaires, opposants, juifs en fuite ont grimpe les sentiers des Pyrenees pour rejoindre l'Espagne. Certes, beaucoup n'ont jamais atteint la frontiere, mais les efforts des passeurs n'ont jamais faibli pour sauver qui pouvait l'etre. Ce livre raconte leurs histoires. Des histoires de bravoure, d'amitie mais aussi des histoires semees d'embuches et de trahisons. Des combattants enroles dans la Bataille de Dunkerque aux aviateurs allies descendus par les Allemands et devant fuir la zone occupee, en passant par les recits d'enfants juifs exfiltres de Belgique et de familles juives entieres, francaises ou etrangeres, condamnees a fuir les persecutions suite a la promulgation du Statut des Juifs Ce livre revient sur ces exfiltrations extraordinaires, entre la France et l'Espagne. Des histoires poignantes et captivantes dans un contexte de peur intense et de conditions d'evasion physiques extremes, parmi lesquelles: - Les enfants du chateau de la Hille: comment des enfants juifs doivent leur survie a l'action de la Croix rouge qui les a recueillis dans l'Ariege. L'histoire de Ruth qui quitta le chateau pour fuir dans les Pyrenees. - L'officier qui a mal tourne l'histoire de Harold Paul Cole, officier britannique qui fut a l'origine de l'arrestation de plus d'une centaine de resistants, notamment au sein du reseau Pat O'Leary. - L'histoire de Ninette: le temoignage de Ninette Dreyfus dont la famille Louis-Dreyfus quitta Paris pour Cannes, sur fond de promulgation du statut des juifs et de traques organisees par Louis Darquier de Pellepoix. S'appuyant sur de nombreux entretiens menes avec des survivants ou les temoignages de familles presentes au moment des faits, l'auteur reconstitue l'histoire de ces traversees dramatiques souvent meconnues, parfois inedites, qui eurent lieu pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En memoire de ces passages, chaque annee en Ariege a lieu une randonnee sur le Chemin de la liberte, l'une des voies d'exfiltration les plus perilleuses de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. A propos de l'auteur Edward Stourton est ecrivain et chroniqueur pour des emissions radio et TV. Il collabore au Times et au Daily Telegraph et a fait ses etudes a Cambridge.
