En captivité en Allemagne, après la prison à Metz, Robert Schuman confiait en 1942: « Les frontières qui nous séparent ne doivent pas être la barrière entre des peuples foncièrement différents les uns des autres, mais le lien entre les hommes qui, en fin de compte, n'ont jamais été eux-mêmes à l'origine des conflagrations ». Paul Collowald, homme des frontières ayant subi l'annexion de l'Alsace et de la Moselle par le régime nazi, a résisté contre les atteintes à la dignité humaine. Une fois la guerre gagnée, il s'engage pour gagner la paix. En 1949, journaliste à Strasbourg, il rencontre le ministre des Affaires étrangères Schuman et sa vie en sera bouleversée. Il vouera désormais sa passion de l'information à la cause européenne. Faire comprendre la complexité et les exigences d'une Europe à unir, aussi bien pour les journalistes que le grand public, Paul Collowald l'assumera en tant que porte-parole des vice-présidents successifs de la Commission Robert Marjolin puis Raymond Barre. Directeur à la direction générale de l'information ensuite, il terminera sa carrière au Parlement Européen comme directeur général de l'information. Tout au long de sa vie, il s'est appuyé sur les principes énoncés par Schuman dans sa Déclaration du 9 mai 1950 pour expliquer l'ouverture des frontières et la liberté de circulation, les nouvelles solidarités entre les États et les peuples et l'élargissement de l'Europe qui devait s'accompagner de son approfondissement. Résister, s'engager, parler de l'Europe à unir, oser le saut dans l'inconnu de la Déclaration Schuman. Le réinventer face aux enjeux d'aujourd'hui. Cette biographie de Paul Collowald retrace le parcours d'un homme qui a fait bien plus que de franchir les frontières entre Strasbourg, Bruxelles et Luxembourg. Avec d'autres de sa génération qui reprennent vie dans ce récit, connus ou méconnus, il a oeuvré pour jeter des ponts afin de les dépasser.
