Le récit s'ouvre sur le coup d'État d'Augusto Pinochet au Chili. Opposant à la dictature, le narrateur assiste à l'arrestation, la torture, et la mort de ses compagnons de lutte. En 1974, il s'exile en Allemagne de l'Est et rejoint rapidement un réseau de jeunes communistes. C'est là qu'il rencontre la fille du fameux révolutionnaire cubain Ulysse Cienfuegos (directement inspiré de Fernando Flores Ibarra, cacique de la révolution castriste, responsable de la mort de centaines de Cubains contre-révolutionnaires ). Éperdument amoureux d'elle, il accepte de la suivre à Cuba pour y fonder une famille et enfin vivre l'idéal communiste. Exalté par l'idée de la révolution, dirigé d'une main de maître par son terrible beau-père, le jeune homme embrasse immédiatement la devise de Castro: la patrie ou la mort. Alors que son mariage bat de l'aile, il découvre petit à petit la face cachée du régime. Les membres de la famille Cienfuegos vivent dans l'opulence, le reste de la population est soumise au rationnement. Chaque frein administratif ou bureaucratique est réglé en un clin d'oeil à la seule mention du nom de son beau-père. Son amitié pour Herberto Padilla l'éclaire sur les persécutions dont les intellectuels font l'objet. Mis au ban de la société castriste par son divorce, il découvre le quotidien des habitants de La Havane, les privations, le secret, le néant des jours. Se méfier de tous, lutter pour trouver un toit, un morceau de pain, surveiller ses actes, ses paroles, jusqu'à ses pensées, à chaque instant. Une seule obsession le guide, comme Reinaldo Arenas ou Zoé Valdès avant lui, quitter l'île, chercher la liberté, encore. Avec esprit, entre mélancolie et humour, Roberto Ampuero raconte la quête d'un idéal.
