Le cedre est un arbre connu pour fournir un bois ligneux, rigide, et peu sensible aux intemperies. C'est aussi le symbole national du Liban. Libanais, Samir Geagea l'est par la naissance, par la tete et par les tripes. Jeune combattant, puis chef de guerre redoute pendant la guerre civile qui a ravage le Liban de 1975 a 1982, il defend alors avec aprete, a la tete des Forces Libanaises, le reduit chretien menace de liquidation et s'oppose a toute forme de vassalisation de son pays, que ce soit par la Syrie, les Palestiniens ou les Israeliens. Accuse de plusieurs meurtres a la fin des hostilites, menace, vilipende, il refuse de fuir son pays malgre les mises en garde. Arrete et condamne a mort par un tribunal a la solde de l'occupant syrien pour ces crimes qu'il n'a pas commis, il croupit onze ans dans une geole de 6m2 au troisieme sous-sol du ministere de l'interieur a Beyrouth. Onze annees passees a lire, a reflechir, a prier et a effectuer un travail en profondeur sur lui-meme. C'est un homme metamorphose qui sort de prison en 2004 le guerrier s'est transforme en homme politique, le chef de bande a la reputation sulfureuse en intellectuel. Seul rescape de la vague d'assassinats qui a emporte en trente ans tous les partisans de la souverainete libanaise, de Bachir Gemayel a Rafiq Hariri, il incarne mieux que quiconque l'idee d'independance nationale, car c'est un principe sur lequel il est aujourd'hui le seul, parmi les responsables politiques libanais, a n'avoir jamais transige. Depuis son nid d'aigle du Mont Liban ou il vit reclus par crainte - encore ! - des tentatives d'assassinat, Samir Geagea preche desormais l'unite et le dialogue entre les communautes dans le cadre de l' Alliance du 14 mars . C'est neanmoins avec angoisse qu'il voit la guerre civile en Syrie ranimer les haines confessionnelles qui ont failli, une fois deja, aboutir au suicide de la nation libanaise. Le guerrier, le reprouve, le sage Samir Geagea aura vecu trois vies - en attendant peut-etre, enfin ! - une quatrieme celle d'homme d'Etat ?
