En considerant le vaste champ du theatre europeen au seuil de la modernite, ce livre propose une approche inedite de ces questions. Car le monologue a une histoire et la fin de la Renaissance et lage baroque en est lun des episodes fondateurs. Des uvres theatrales aux traites theoriques et aux dictionnaires, il saffirme comme un procede dramatique specifique, avec ses formes et ses enjeux propres. Reconstituer la poetique du monologue baroque, en tenant compte des principes esthetiques qui en regissent la composition et des modalites concretes de la representation, conduit a remettre en question le caractere anti-dramatique souvent associe a la forme monologuee: loin detre necessairement une pause dans laction, cette convention enonciative construit le rapport du spectateur a la fiction, dessine la topographie scenique et se donne comme un vecteur essentiel de lefficacite dramatique. Surtout, le monologue devient alors un point dancrage dune nouvelle dramaturgie de linteriorite: non pas sur le mode de la revelation ou de lexpression sans mediation dun - moi -, mais sur celui de la dramatisation dune identite ou de la representation dune subjectivite en acte. Au prisme de ce deplacement des termes de lanalyse, lhistoire de la representation theatrale rejoint une histoire des representations et reprend a nouveaux frais la question du sujet moderne.
