Dans la veine des chroniques subjectives (Inflammables ou Ascendant Sagittaire), Montagne-Sainte-Genevieve, cote cour poursuit et clot l'aventure singuliere dont Cite Champagne, qui s'etait ouvert sur la rencontre avec Gerard Lebovici une nuit de mai 68, racontait les trois premieres annees. De 1972 a 1974, annee qui voit la mort de Pompidou et la victoire de Giscard sur Mitterrand, Champ Libre, desormais installe rue de la Montagne Sainte-Genevieve, mu par l'echauffement des esprits autant que par l'ambition de laisser une trace en donnant libre champ a l'imagination, multiplie les projets. Pendant que Le Saux continue d'attenter au bon gout, l'inenarrable Petris cultive le scandale en traduisant a tour de bras Boulgakov, Chklovski, James, et Spinrad. De son cote, Raphael Sorin joue les rabatteurs et se heurte non sans drolerie a Floriana Lebovici, en charge de la presse. Rue de la Montagne Sainte-Genevieve, le cinema est partout et on discute donc de tout, de l'art de la guerre comme de la sexualite sans entraves, de Leo Ferre comme des Doors. On y cotoie aussi Baynac, Manchette, Boudard, Sangla, de Roux, Nucera, Marie Minois ou Brigitte Fossey. Quand on ne dejeune pas rue des Canettes avec Rinaldi, on dine avec Burroughs aux Halles. A Grasse, Herbart evoque Gide et l'annee 36. A Paris, devant son agent effaree, Andy Wharol, blanc et impavide, accepte de vendre les droits de son roman pour 1 dollar... On part en chasse d'un ancien chef SS avec Guegan, on manque de se faire braquer avec Lebovici, on brise des piles d'assiettes avec Jean-Jacques Schuhl dans une brasserie de Montparnasse ! Et deux clans se forment, qui s'opposent de plus en plus frontalement: les creatifs (Guegan, Le Saux, Sorin, Guiomar) et les proprietaires (les Lebovici) - au-dessus desquels plane l'eminence grise Debord... surnomme Tout-a-l'ego par Petris. Jusqu'a ce matin de novembre 1974 a la Coupole ou, sous le regard ivre de Terence Stamp, la rupture est consommee... Ce livre est l'histoire vive, et necessairement personnelle, des passions et des desirs dans un temps ou l'affectivite reglait les montres . Mais peut-etre est-ce aussi, dans le souvenir des coups de foudre et des amities, du desamour et de la lassitude, des coleres et des trahisons, l'histoire d'une reconciliation ?

Ecrivain (plus de vingt romans et recits, dont, chez Grasset, Pere et fils, Pour toujours, Soudain, l'amour), traducteur (en particulier de Bukowski), Gerard Guegan fut d'abord editeur. Avant de diriger, de 1975 a 1979, Le Sagittaire, il avait des 1969 cree avec Gerard Lebovici, impresario mythique assassine en 1984, Champ Libre, dont il fut durant six ans le principal animateur tandis qu'Alain Le Saux en assurait la direction artistique.
