Le point de depart de ce livre est, en janvier dernier, une conversation de Bernard-Henri Levy avec celui qui ne va pas tarder a etre elu President de la Republique et qui, pour l'heure, sollicite son soutien: Nicolas Sarkozy. L'auteur quitte son interlocuteur (dont il brosse, au passage, et en ecrivain, un portrait vif et passionnant) avec la double conviction: primo, qu'il n'est pas question, pour lui, de prendre le chemin que prennent, au meme moment, certains de ses amis et qu'il votera donc une fois encore, comme il l'a fait toute sa vie, pour ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler la gauche; mais, secundo, qu'il est difficile de donner tout a fait tort a ce que lui dit le futur President de l'etat d'archaisme, de decomposition politique et morale, voire d'indigence ideologique, dans lequel se trouve sa famille politique. Quel sens y a-t-il, aujourd'hui, a se reclamer de cette gauche dont Sartre disait deja, il y a presque cinquante ans, dans sa preface a Aden-Arabie de Paul Nizan, qu'elle etait un grand cadavre a la renverse ou les vers se sont mis C'est la premiere question que pose donc ce livre et a laquelle il repond sur le double registre du recit personnel et de la reflexion theorique. De quoi le progressisme contemporain est-il malade et quels sont les symptomes, les figures, les causes, de cette maladie ? C'est la seconde question qu'il souleve, plus complexe, et qui le conduit a des developpements sur, pele-mele, l'anti-americanisme, les mythes de l'empire, la question de l'Islam, le retour de l'antidreyfusisme, les illusions de l'anti-liberalisme ou le parfum munichois qui rode autour de nombre de discussions sur la guerre et sur la paix. A cette seconde question, qui occupe la plus grande partie de l'ouvrage, il repond par une these simple, mais paradoxale, et qui fera debat: la gauche, en France et dans le monde, a eu a faire face, au XXeme siecle, a une premiere tentation totalitaire qui tournait autour de l'idee communiste et dont elle est, pour l'essentiel, revenue; elle connait aujourd'hui, en ce debut du XXIeme siecle, une seconde tentation totalitaire qui grandit a la place de la precedente, sur les decombres qu'elle a laisses, et dont le trait le plus singulier est qu'elle puise son inspiration dans une thematique venue plutot de la droite, quand ce n'est pas de l'extreme-droite, ou du logiciel de ce que l'auteur appela, naguere, l'Ideologie francaise . Pour la gauche, donc, mais a condition de la refonder. Pour la refondation, donc, mais a condition d'en reconnaitre, par dela les batailles de clocher, les enjeux veritables et planetaires. Trente ans apres La Barbarie a visage humain et L'ideologie francaise, Bernard-Henri levy persiste dans son combat de toujours: celui de la liberte de l'esprit contre toutes les varietes de l'obscurantisme.
