Notre ignorance quasi totale de l'identite des sculpteurs de Chartres, de l'architecte de la Sainte-Chapelle ou des enlumineurs des grands manuscrits a peinture n'est pas le fruit de lacunes documentaires, mais du faible interet porte par les hommes du Moyen Age a ceux que nous appelons les artistes. Plus exactement, ils estiment que le seul veritable createur est le commanditaire, celui qui a voulu l'oeuvre et l'a financee, et c'est lui que nomment les sources. Intellectuel (quand il est homme d'Eglise) ou bien detenteur de la puissance publique, il n'est pas un mecene qui permet a l'artiste de s'exprimer, mais un maitre d'ouvrage qui trace un programme precis a l'intention du peintre, du sculpteur ou de l'architecte. De ceux-ci il n'attend qu'une seule chose: l'excellence manuelle dans l'execution. Dans les derniers siecles de l'Antiquite, la creation artistique se trouve entre les mains du pouvoir imperial, puis passe, sous les Merovingiens et plus encore sous les Carolingiens, a celles des rois, enfin a celles des abbes et des eveques, avant de revenir - comme dans l'Allemagne ottonienne ou la France de Saint Louis - au roi. C'est seulement avec l'apparition, aux XIVe et XVe siecles, d'une societe civile qui se detache peu a peu de l'Eglise et de la monarchie que la creation s'affirme en tant que telle. Le mouvement est alors lance avec le Quattrocento italien puis la Renaissance, on assiste au veritable sacre de l'artiste. L'approche, tres novatrice, d'Alain Erlande-Brandenburg enrichit la reflexion traditionnelle sur le jeu des styles ou des formes, elle affine la reconstitution (chronologique) des filiations et des influences; elles s'inscrit dans la contingence, dans l'Histoire elle-meme. Elle libere l'histoire de l'art de la froideur et de l'abstraction qui parfois la menacent et lui confere la vitalite du vecu humain. Alain Erlande-Brandenburg, directeur d'etudes a l'Ecole Pratique des hautes etudes (IVe section), professeur a l'Ecole des chartes, conservateur general du Patrimoine, ancien adjoint au directeur des Musees de France, ancien directeur des Archives de France (1994-1998), a publie en 1984 L'Art gothique (editions Mazenod), en 1987 La Conquete de l'Europe, 1260-1380 ("L'Univers des formes"), en 1992 La Cathedrale (Fayard), ainsi que de nombreux ouvrages relatifs a l'art du Moyen Age.
