Comment en est-on arrive la? Apres une longue periode de mefiance due a l'origine paienne de la science, a partir de saint Augustin l'Eglise finit par adopter la science comme auxiliaire de la theologie. En fait, la science recouvre alors un systeme du monde impose par les theologiens. Les quelques tentatives de science independante _ Jean Scot Erigene, l'ecole de Chartres _ ne survivent pas aux censures. De meme, les grands visionnaires des XVe et XVIe siecles, un moment toleres, sont victimes de la reaction post-tridentine. Seules les mathematiques, contenant en elles-memes leurs principes, continuent leur chemin en dehors de tout soupcon. C'est pourtant par elles que va venir le scandale. Puisque c'est sur elles que s'appuient Copernic et la science mecaniste pour dire que la terre tourne. L'attitude de l'Eglise a l'egard de la science est aujourd'hui encore l'objet de nombreuses controverses. Depuis saint Paul, entre les deux voies d'acces a la verite, la revelation et la science, l'entente fut maintes fois affirmee, jamais realisee. Ce premier volume, qui nous conduit jusqu'au XVIIe siecle, retrace cet aspect essentiel de l'histoire des idees: comment l'Eglise a-t-elle accueilli la science? Georges Minois, agrege d'histoire, docteur en histoire et docteur es-Lettres, est membre du Centre International de Recherches et d'Etudes Transdisciplinaires (CIRET). Specialise dans l'histoire sociale et des mentalites religieuses, il est l'auteur chez Fayard de plusieurs ouvrages largement traduits, tels que l'Histoire de la vieillesse, le Confesseur du roi, l'Histoire des enfers, l'Eglise et la guerre, et un second volume sur l'Eglise et la science (De Galilee a Jean-Paul II).
