About the Author :
1622 - 1673. Fils d'un tapissier, il va chez les jesuites au college de Clermont, puis fait des etudes de droit, avant de se tourner vers le theatre. Il cree avec une famille de comediens, les Bejart, l'Illustre-Theatre (1643), qui n'a pas de succes. Il dirige alors pendant quinze ans (1643-1658) une troupe ambulante qui interprete ses premieres comedies, inspirees de la farce italienne ("l'Etourdi, " 1655; "le Depit amoureux, " 1656). A partir de 1659, installe a Paris, protege de LouisXIV, il donne pour les divertissements de la Cour ou pour le public parisien de nombreuses pieces en vers ou en prose: comedies-ballets, comedies pastorales, comedies heroiques, comedies de caractere. Acteur et directeur de troupe, il cree veritablement la mise en scene et dirige avec precision le jeu des acteurs. Il joue, en tant qu'auteur, sur toute la gamme des effets comiques, de la farce la plus bouffonne jusqu'a la psychologie la plus elaboree. Les pieces ou, s'attaquant a un vice de l'esprit ou de la societe, il campe des personnages qui forment des types, sont de veritables chefs-d'oeuvre. Ses principales comedies sont: "les Precieuses ridicules" (1659); "l'Ecole des maris, les Facheux" (1661); "l'Ecole des femmes" (1662); "Dom Juan," "l'Amour medecin" (1665); "le Misanthrope," "le Medecin malgre lui" (1666); "Amphitryon, George Dandin," "l'Avare" (1668); "le Tartuffe," "Monsieur de Pourceaugnac" (1669); "le Bourgeois gentilhomme" (1670); "les Fourberies de Scapin," "la Comtesse d'Escarbagnas" (1671); "les Femmes savantes" (1672); "le Malade imaginaire" (1673). Moliere meurt quelques heures apres la quatrieme representation de cette piece."
