Estas son las preguntas que se plantea Zweig en esta preciosa historia, deliciosa y cruel a la vez, por cuanto opone a la figura de una mujer enamorada la de un escritor egocéntrico y mujeriego, ignorante del amor incondicional que se le profesa. Carta de una desconocida explora el oscuro terreno de los sentimientos. La historia gira en torno a R., un famoso escritor que recibe en su casa una misteriosa carta que le remite una mujer desconocida. En ella le confiesa su amor, un amor que resistió el paso del tiempo y el desdén del propio escritor, que jamás se percató de su existencia. A través de sus palabras, la desconocida nos revela los momentos más relevantes de su vida, condicionada por ese amor desde que por primera vez cruzó su mirada con la del escritor, cuando ella no era más que una niña.

About the Author :
Stefan Zweig nació en Viena, Austria, el 28 de noviembre de 1881, y falleció en Petrópolis, Brasil, el 22 de febrero de 1942. Criado en una familia judía acomodada, se licenció en la Universidad de Viena, doctorándose en Filosofía. De mentalidad pacifista, su postura anti-belicista queda explícita en su obra Jeremías, una pieza teatral que denunciaba la Primera Guerra Mundial. Durante sus años de juventud recorrió Europa, trabajando como traductor y colaborando en distintas publicaciones. Su origen judío lo obligó a alejarse de su hogar al comenzar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero nunca fue particularmente religioso ni era simpatizante del movimiento sionísta. Ante la implantación cada vez mayor de las fuerzas nazis en Austria, emigró a Londres. De su producción literaria destacan Cuerdas de plata, un ejemplar donde reúne su poesía, y novelas como Jeremías, Amok, El jugador de ajedrez o La confusión de los sentimientos. Además del teatro, Zweig escribió novela, poesía y ensayo, aunque posiblemente sea más conocido por sus biografías, especialmente las de María Estuardo y Erasmo de Rotterdam. También escribió las biografías de algunos de los personajes más grandes de la literatura como Dickens o Balzac. Escribió también una autobiografía en 1941, El mundo de ayer. Se le considera uno de los escritores más significativos del periodo de entreguerras. Exiliado en 1934 en Gran Bretaña, Estados Unidos y finalmente Brasil, donde falleció. Su frustración ante lo que consideraba el fracaso de la cultura europea lo empujaron a la desesperación, suicidándose junto con su segunda esposa Lotte (Charlotte Elisabeth Altmann) en Petrópolis.
