About the Book

How easy is it to forgive those who cause you so much pain? Uong Nguyen's journey from atheism, under the North Vietnamese Communist regime, to Christ is not an easy journey. Anger, bitterness, trauma, brutality and despair can destroy a man, yet the love of God can turn anyone around. Growing up during the Vietnam War made a lasting impact on Uong's life. Conscripted into the Vietnamese army at 18, he saw firsthand the horrors of the Cambodian 'Killing Fields' and the brutality of the Khmer Rouge. He also experienced the despair of languishing in a Thai refugee camp for seven years. This book reveals how God is with us on our journey to faith and how the power of restoration and forgiveness are keys in the life of any believer.

Review :
It was while I was staying with Uong and his family that I had the opportunity to read the draft copy of this book. After reading a couple of chapters I sat down in his living room across from him and asked, 'Is this story actually true?' Uong smiled and assured me it was. Like me, when you read Uong Nguyen's riveting story, it will astound you. It's totally miraculous. It tells of unimaginable pain and loss while at the same time proof of the redeeming power of his compassionate God. Looking at Indochina from afar (even though I had American friends in the Vietnam war) still never gave me any sense at all of what it could have been like being on the receiving end of United States bombers. One of these killed Uong's best friend as they played together at the edge of their village. A B52 flying at great altitude basically destroyed the mind and ultimately the life of his brother as well. Many of us will have read stories of the brutality of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia savagely murdering two million of their own people. Uong's story of survival tells of being captured and tortured by the Khmer Rouge for two terrible years. The fact that he survived at all while others around him died, is an absolute miracle in itself. With the intervention of the International Red Cross, eventually Uong was delivered by his captors to Thailand and again this young man was imprisonment in Thai Military Jail and was interrogated by the Thai Intelligent for information that they think he has. Months in Thai Military Prison and from there Uong was sent to a refugee camp and became a refugee and lived there from 1985 to 1989. But I have to say that the greatest miracle of all was that this man, who grew up in North Vietnam with no concept of the Living God actually called out to an unknown god in the dense and unforgiving jungles of Cambodia and heard him answer. Years later he arrived in Australia as a refugee and there found God and inspired by the forgiving of the Lord Jesus Christ, who gives Uong the ability to forgive and to know forgiveness. I commend Uong and his story to you, it is an intense read, but it will impact your life as you find in its pages a new sense of both the degradation of the human condition and the all redeeming grace of God. David Garratt New Sound Publishing It is my great privilege to be considered the friend of Uong, and being a brother in Christ has added a dimension to my life I treasure. Twisting Job's words somewhat, I have heard of Uong with the hearing of the ear but now my eyes have seen him. Having picked up snippets of his life story prior to the reading of this work, finally comprehending the enormity of the life of this remarkable gift of God is truly amazing. I commend reflection on this book for spiritual nourishment, development of faith and stimulus to believe God for continued miracles in the daily activity of life even if it never parallels these epic proportions.
