About the Book

Anarcho-Punk: Music and Resistance in London 1977-1988 (Expanded Edition) by David Insurrection Anarcho-Punk: Music and Resistance in London 1977-1988 is the distillation of over three years' work. It's the story of an often overlooked scene. Anarcho-punk in the 1980s truly rocked the boat. Much more than music it set out to change the world and in a not insignificant way did just that. It inspired a generation of activists, artists and musicians to take up the fight for a better, fairer world. This is their story. As we return to the embattled 1970s and 1980s David Insurrection takes us on a journey to visit some of the scene's most significant locations and hot spots, to places where change mattered and the spirit of revolt burned brightest. In this new Expanded Edition David has added fifteen more chapters with over fifty pages of additional text and colour images, making this book the most comprehensive look at the Anarcho-Punk scene, it's people, venues and squats, that has ever been published.

About the Author :
David Insurrection was born in 1962 and raised in NE Scotland. He's married with one daughter. At the age of 17 in the autumn of 1979 he discovered punk rock. It would leave a lasting impression on him. In 1980 he first heard Crass. That experience changed everything and would determine the direction his life took from that point onwards. In 1984 he began to identify as an anarchist and took his first activist steps. By this time he had immersed himself in everything anarcho-punk. In 1988 he produced his first zine. His next zine in 1990 was called Insurrection. In 1993 he moved to London. He stayed there for four and a half years returning to his native Scotland in 1997. It was during his stay in London that he first got a hankering for writing a book on anarcho-punk. He's still involved in the scene to this day.

Review :
In this easy to read volume, David Insurrection takes you on a virtual tour of spots in London that formed part of the anarcho-punk counter-cultural landscape in the 1980s. This book is the result of one man's mission to seek out the buildings that had hosted gigs, band members, zine writers and organisers in the heady days when anarcho-punks numbered enough to Stop The City. A few of the sites' previous history could lend one to consider a psycho-geographical influence but, in truth, the draw was simply that a house, shop, fire station or office block was empty and could be put to better use. Anarcho-Punk Music And Resistance in London is well researched and easy to read. Throughout the book, David uses the voices of some participants to illustrate events, breathing life into what could otherwise be a dry walk around a bunch of random buildings across the capital. It was what went on between people within the walls rather than the bricks and mortar themselves that made these places special. https: //louderthanwar.com/anarcho-punk-music-and-resistance-in-london-1977-1988-by-david-insurrection-book-review/ For those in to Anarcho Punk will love this book by Dave Insurrection as this covers the music and resistance from 1977-1998. I of course visited a few of the places mentioned in the book and heard of some of the other places but I wasn't aware of just how wide the anarchist punk scene covered in London. There's simply so many stories from the likes of Tony D of Kill Your Pet Puppy fanzine right through to the guy who ran Punk Lives magazine that many loved up and down the country and widely distributed for a time. All the bands that you know and love from the Anarcho-Punk scene are featured and there's stories behind certain releases and gigs covered including Conway Hall and the infamous Gathering of the five thousand at Brixton Academy that I attended. What's remarkable Dave has photographed all the places where history was made and for me that's class! For those who were part of the movement or simply just bought the records and gigs will enjoy the trip down memory lane! This is my favourite book so far in 2025 and I'm sure you'll love it as much as I did! https: //streetvoiceuk2020.co.uk/2025/04/08/anarcho-punk-music-and-resistance-in-london-1977-1988-dave-insurrection/
