About the Book

Douglas Arthur Chambers joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1915. He took three sketchbooks with him and documented his time in the army, from training in the UK to service on the Somme. This book follows his journey through training and then active service and details his experiences, and how he felt about them, in picture form. We see the ideal compared with the reality of everyday events, on and off duty, and relationships with his fellow soldiers and his superiors. The book also shows some of his service records through certificates and army forms together with some background of Douglas' life as a draughtsman/artist before and after the war. There are examples of some of the views he painted, in both England and France, compared with the views as they appear today. This book documents a unique record made by a serving soldier of life in all its rawness in WW1.

About the Author :
Sue Doyle is a children's nurse and is Douglas Arthur Chambers' granddaughter. She found Douglas' sketchbooks, together with his watercolour paint box and some brushes in an old shoebox when clearing out her mother's house. She knew nothing of Douglas' exploits during the war as he never spoke about them. However, she is pleased to be able to make these drawings and cartoons of her grandfather's WW1 experiences available to a wider audience. She and husband Chris have two grown up children and live in Taunton with a rescued greyhound.

Review :
`It is not the comic drawing (in the fashionable current style) nor yet the acute observation of men and situations that make this book so moving. It is the modest man holding the pen and brush who volunteered for service as a stretcher bearer. Hundreds like him, impelled to leave the shelter of a peaceful home, suffered traumas they mostly hoped to forget. This sketchbook was part of Douglas Chambers' forgetting - `one who had some'.
