About the Book

This publication won first place in the schools category of the prestigious 'Mentor UK CHAMP Awards' 2008 and is a comprehensive alcohol education resource for students aged 11 - 15. It is designed to support best practice in PSHCE education in the UK. It has been written to stimulate discussion, challenge attitudes about alcohol use, explore the effects of parental drinking on the family, peer pressure and cultural influence, anti-social behaviour and problem drinking. "Adolescents Anonymous" reassures young people that they should not have to remain silent or anonymous about the effects of alcohol upon themselves or those close to them. This publication has been produced as an educational response to the Kirklees Alcohol Strategy. This seeks 'to develop and maintain a responsible attitude to the consumption of alcohol and promote the health of residents and visitors...minimising health harms, violence and anti-social behaviour associated with excessive drinking'. The resource models good practice in drugs education by: providing accurate information; building on a successful Kirklees drug education programme in year 6 (SPICED) used in over 95 per cent of Kirklees schools; exploring attitudes towards alcohol, alcohol use and users; developing skills; developing coping strategies; and exploring consequences of alcohol using behaviour. The DVD uses professional actors. While the resource pack has been designed to be used with students aged 11 - 14, parts 1 and 3 of the DVD could be used with older students/adults. The activities featured are adaptable for use with other age groups. "Adolescents Anonymous" is also included in the Secondary Integrated PSHCE education Toolkit supplied free to all Kirklees high schools in July 2008. The Third Edition of the Toolkit published in March 2010 is also available for purchase (ISBN 978-1-904450-45-0).

Review :
"In 2008 thisresource won first place in the schools category of the prestigious 'Mentor UK CHAMP Awards'. The judges commented: 'The Kirklees award proves there are great projects out there helping young people to make sensible choices and live healthy lives' and that: 'The Kirklees resource Adolescents Anonymous does more than increasing knowledge and understanding about alcohol - it also recognizes that challenging attitudes is fundamental if an impact on behaviour is to be achieved'. An independent review by Druglink, (Captain Kirklees March/April 2009) says: 'It's a fantastic resource for those who want to engage with young people around alcohol'. The Interim Winners Evaluation Report (Mentor UK CHAMP Awards - March 2009), reports that: 'the involvement of young people in every stage of the development of the DVD (from re-drafting the script and acting through to interviewing the companies who had tendered for developing the final product) has resulted in a resource which has been recognised both by the CHAMP Awards judging panels and by local schools and youth agencies in Kirklees as speaking directly to young people and providing a crucial tool for teachers and youth leaders seeking to equip young people to make healthier life choices'."
