About the Book

Walter Weston (1861-1940) was a western pioneer of mountain climbing as a sport in Japan. An Anglican clergyman, Weston spent some 14 years as a missionary in Japan between 1888 and 1915, during which time he dedicated his leisure hours to climbing what bacame known as the "Japanese Alps" and exploring the lives, landscapes and traditions of rural Japan. Weston was instrumental in the establishment of the Japanese Alpine Club as well as being an active member of the Alpine Club of Great Britain, the Japan Society of London and the Royal Geographical Society. Weston's influence and legacy to the world of mountaineering remains to this day, with the climbing season in the Japanese Northern Alps commencing with a festival named after him. He is virtually unique in his identification as an individual westerner with the emergence of a sport in Japan. Weston's appreciation of the Japanese love of nature and the way it pervades every aspect of Japanese tradition led him to write affectionate observations on Meiji Japan's rural interior and changing culture. This collection gathers Weston's four books, the first of which gives as thorough an analysis of Japan's Alps as the earlier British mountaineering pioneers William Conway and Douglas Freshfield did of the Swiss. Weston's books contain valuable writing on such topical and diverse subjects as "The Making of the Soldier in Modern Japan", "Japan's Debt to China", "Sports and Pastimes in Ancient and Modern Japan" and "The Earthquake of 1923". All volumes are reprinted from original editions including illustrations. This set complements any collection on Meiji Japan and provides research material on exploration, nature, mountaineering, missionary activity and human ecology in turn-of-the-century Japan.
