About the Book

This book tells the story of three young Germans, who emigrate to Australia in 1960, with no previous knowledge of the country or language. Trained as carpenters and as a butcher, they seek work but these qualifications are of no use. Wandering across the country, they search for work and adventure. After the initial frustration, they adjust to the environment as 'real dinkum Aussies'. The fun begins when they erect farm buildings in the outback and return to the city to spend their money on women and fast cars. After two years, Kurt is relieved when they finally reach Adelaide, where he boards a ship to return home and Fred goes on to Perth. Eventually, the men begin to settle down. Fred revisits his north German home, but finds he is unable to pick up the threads of his old life there. Much to the dismay of his family, he books a passage to return to Australia. When the ship calls at Southampton, he notices an elegant young English woman coming up the gang plank.

About the Author :
Susan Duxbury was born in West Yorkshire and educated at Salt Grammar School in the famous model village of Saltaire, Shipley. She gained a diploma in Hotel Management before leaving England for New Zealand in 1967. Tje following year, she moved to Austalia, where she met her husband, a German carpenter. Living in a caravan and travelling with him, she gained the experiences and insight into the extraordinary culture and environment that form the backdrop to this perceptive story of life 'beyond the stump'. She then spent some years in Australia before returning to Germany, where she taught English in a private language school. She now lives on the Germany/Danish border and has two adult sons.

Review :
"It's by turns a funny and poignant novel, and conjures up life on the open road in the dusty Outback marvellously." David Barnett, Weekend Telegraph & Argus.
