About the Book

This text contains the edited versions of many of the papers presented at the 3rd International conference on Computer Aided Optimum Design of Structures [OPTI] which was held in Zaragoza in July 1993. The chapters show the ever increasing new research on optimization taking place within the scientific community and the numerous applications of the technique in industry. Included are chapters concentrating on new methods of numerical optimization, such as simulated annealing, bayesian methods and biological growth and genetic search, which are being used to solve optimization problems in different and innovative ways. The structural models covered in this book are not limited to linear and elastic behaviour but also include chapters considering non-linear analysis, seismic loading and reliability-based design. The important topics of sensitivity analysis and design of adaptive grids for discretized structural models are also covered. The trend for increased use of the technique in industrial applications is also reflected in this proceedings volume with chapters on optimization techniques being used for a wide variety of design problems in fields as diverse as offshore, mechanical, civil and aerospace engineering.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Design optimization: optimization of soil anchorages; shape optimization of a fractional horse-power dc-motor by stochastic methods. Part 2 Shape optimization: viscoplastic constructions optimisation with the account of the history of loading; an adaptive mesh refinement procedure for shape optimal design. Part 3 Expert systems and knowledge based optimization: SDIS - an intelligent design system for the configurational optimization of structures; knowledge based and heuristic approach to the cost optimum design of concrete structures. Part 4 Design of FE/BE adaptive grids: reinforced concrete framework design optimization; analysis of the effectivity of the Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimator. Part 5 Sensitivity analysis: a stress smoothing method through post processing - applications in design sensitivity analysis; flutter sensitivity studies of high aspect ratio aircraft wings. Part 6 Optimization in reliability-based design: optimization in reliability based design of laminated composite structures; slope profile optimization. Part 7 Integrated packages for optimization design: integrated modular software for design optimization with structural and multidisciplinary objectives; a parametric design based approach to structural shape optimization. Part 8 Optimization in non-linear analysis: analysis and design of cable net structures through optimization techniques; optimization of earthquake-loaded structures. Part 9 New methods for numerical optimization: approximate analysis models based on the analytical solution; explicit approximation of equality constraints.
