Review :
This is the second volume to accompany the BBC TV series in which weatherman Derek Brockway, accompanied by local people working closely within their landscape, explores some of his favourite walks in Wales. Written with series producer Julian Carey, whose high quality photographs accompany the text, the walks cover a broad variety of different landscape within Wales, offering something for everyone - from a gentle stroll, to the ascent of Y Lliwedd, Snowdon. Brockway chooses a different walk for every month, four of the walks being set within the Brecon Beacons National Park. January he sets aside for the ascent of Pen y Fan, a tradition for New Year's Day in the area, affording views over the nature reserve, Craig Cerrig-gleisiad, home to the rare purple saxifrage, ring ouzels and peregrine falcons. With over 100,000 visitors a year though, there is a warning here about how popular, and thus, over-used the peak has become. For February he goes for a romantic theme exploring Newborough Warren on Ynys Mon, the forest, dunes and the island of Llanddwyn, home of Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. Wanting a strong Welsh theme for March (he visited Saint David's in the first series) he selects a remote and desolately beautiful circular route from Dylife, near Machynlleth, taking in part of Glyndwr's way, designated as a National Trail in 2000. April shower season is dedicated to the waterfalls around Pontneddfechan near Merthyr Tudful. Throughout the year he picks a walk which offers seasonal delights, from Snowdon and the ascent to Y Lliwedd on the Watkin path; the canals and mysteries of Dinas Bran castle in Llangollen; The Sugar Loaf from Abergavenny; a walk across the width of the Gower Peninsula in September, including one of the most important ancient sites in Britain at Paviland; the Llanwonno forest near Rhondda, and finally, a Christmas circular from Bethlehem near Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, ending, as befits a cold December day, with a Sunday roast in the Plough Inn. It is an excellent book to encourage and inspire those who may not be so familiar with walking in Wales. His style is enthusiastic and informative, offering a lively introduction not just to the walks but to the social history, industrial heritage, ancient history, mythology, wildlife, and the flora and fauna encountered on each of the walks. His enjoyment and enthusiasm for each of the places he visits is so palpable, it will enrich and enthuse armchair explorers and walkers alike.
