About the Author :
Alison Matthews has lived in Penyffordd since 1966 and has compiled an extensive collection of old photographs of the area. She is a B.Ed. graduate of the University of Wales, Bangor, and was a primary school teacher in Connah's Quay and Northop Hall. Since retirement she has devoted a great deal of her time to local history research and has completed a number of history and archive courses with the University of Wales. Rhona Phoenix worked for the National Health Service for approximately 35 years, retiring in 1997. She trained as a State Registered Nurse at Liverpool Royal Infirmary before working at Chester Royal Infirmary, John Summers Steelworks and British Aerospace. In 1974 she joined the staff of Meadowslea Hospital eventually becoming the hospital manager, a post which she held for 11 years. On her retirement, she was awardedthe MBE for services to nursing in Flintshire. Rhona completed a BA (Honours) degree with the Open University in 1998. In retirement, she serves as the chairperson of the Meadowslea Hospital & Community League of Friends and is also the secretary of the Trinity Church Council.
