About the Book

Clinical decision making is now recognised as an indispensable facet of professional nursing care. It is essential that students develop sound decision making skills in order to deal with the challenges they will encounter as registered nurses. This book enables pre-registration nursing students to understand, develop and apply these skills in order to practise safely and effectively. The structure of the book helps the student progress in effective decision making right from the first to final year of their programme. The book links theory to previous students′ experiences and clinical scenarios to show how to use these skills in practice. Mooi Standing is an Independent Academic Consultant (UK and International) & Accredited NMC Reviewer. She leads on curriculum development, quality review and enhancement of theoretical and practice-based learning in nursing and allied health programmes for Universities across UK and Internationally. She also manages the development of collaborative international partnerships on educational programmes between UK higher education institutions and Asia.

Review :
′[The author] provides a detailed insight into the decisions made throughout clinical practice. She also looks at the observations that inform clinical practice and approaches to decision making that take the patients′ needs into account. This book will help students to understand accountability and to justify their decisions...[It also] addresses the Nursing and Midwifery′s Council′s pre-registration standards of competencies and the essential study skills clusters needed to deliver safe, effective nursing care′ - 4 star review Nursing Standard This book clearly links the topics discussed with the NMC standards for pre registration studnets and as such allows the students to see the relevence to their role and responsibilites. Each chapter follows a logical flow from what is clinical judgement and decision making to confidence in decision making. The chapters all have additional case studies and scenarios for students to explore as well as activites for students to use to further devleop and enhance their learning Lynn Dracup Northumbria University A very useful text for students in their final placement. There are very few books that really look at decision making in such a logical and comprehensive manner. The book is clearly laid out and I liked the activities and case studies. Christine Howe University of Hull As with the rest of the series this is a very informative and inviting text for nursing students. The layout of the chapters, NMC Standards and ESC and chapter aims are excellent. The case studies and activities are valuable teaching aids. Marguerita Leyden University of Salford
