Fascinée par l'histoire d'un échec, la critique s'était consacrée aux séjours mouvementés de Voltaire à Berlin, occultant la correspondance de l'homme de lettres et du monarque que cet ouvrage met en pleine lumière. Par son ampleur, sa durée, sa richesse, elle méritait une analyse ne la considérant pas seulement comme un document historique, mais comme la pièce à conviction d'une aventure intellectuelle que permettait l'instrument épistolaire. La lettre assure la pérennité d'un autre mode d'être et de paraître, met en scène les 'lumières' qui furent moins objet de recherhce et d'approfondissement que lieu de rencontre et de reconnaissance. Ainsi se justifie le sous-titre: 'une dramaturgie des Lumières'. Les images enchevêtrées du destinataire et de l'expéditeur, leurs rêves, leurs tactiques sont entraînés dans un processus où le jeu des réponses de lettre à lettre impose sa logique et ses caprices. Ces textes sont à la fois des éclats de vie et des œuvres où l'on rencontre une réalité littéraire différente de l'histoire pure, ce qui conduit à s'interroger conjointement sur une aventure vécue et sur l'usage d'un instrument de communication. Ainsi Voltaire et Frédéric se sont-ils offerts et ont-ils offert au monde une fête des Lumières où étaient conviées la pensée et l'histoire.
