About the Book

From its early days, there has been Welsh representation at Oxford University. This book refers to some of those who attended the university over the centuries: Welsh people, with special talents, who served their homeland and beyond. 8 illustrations and engravings.

Review :
The author of the book, Dr. R. Brinley Jones., CBE., MA., FSA., is a graduate of University of Wales and University of Oxford. He was President of the National Library of Wales from 1996 to 2007. He is now President of University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Fel y gŵyr ei gydnabod a’i gyfeillion, un o bennaf ladmeryddion rhinweddau Prifysgol Rhydychen ymhlith y Cymry llengar yw’r Dr R. Brinley Jones. Yn frodor o’r Rhondda ac yn ŵr gradd o brifysgolion Cymru a Rhydychen, cafodd yrfa lwyddiannus fel addysgwr – yn ddarlithydd yng Ngholeg y Brifysgol Abertawe (fel yr oedd y pryd hynny) ac yn Warden Coleg Llanymddyfri – ac fel cyfarwyddwr diwyd Gwasg Prifysgol Cymru. Bu hefyd yn Llywydd y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol ac erys yn Llywydd tra ymroddgar Prifysgol Cymru y Drindod Dewi Sant. Gŵyr pawb yn y cylchoedd hyn am ei hynawsedd a’i foneddigeiddrwydd, yn ogystal â’i sêl o blaid gwarineb a dysg. Does dim amheuaeth nad llafur cariad yw’r llyfr hwn. Golygodd eisoes, ynghyd â’i gyfaill mynwesol y diweddar Athro D. Ellis Evans, y gyfrol Cofio’r Dafydd, sef hanes Cymdeithas Dafydd ap Gwilym, cymdeithas Gymraeg myfyrwyr Rhydychen, ar achlysur ei chanmlwyddiant yn 1986, ac mae cof gen i wrando arno yn traethu ar Gymru a Phrifysgol Rhydychen mewn darlith gyhoeddus ar faes Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Abertawe mor bell yn ôl ag 1982. Mewn pum pennod gryno, rhydd yr awdur i ni hanes y brifysgol o’i dechreuadau yn y ddeuddegfed ganrif hyd at y newidiadau cyfansoddiadol mawr a ddigwyddodd yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg. Er mai fframwaith yw hyn ar gyfer adrodd hanes y Cymry a fu yno, mae’r penodau hyn yn gyforiog o wybodaeth ddifyr ac arbenigol. Er enghraifft, wrth drafod yr Oesoedd Canol sonnir am dwf y prifysgolion yn Ewrop, eu cysylltiadau â’r tai crefydd ac am yr urddau crefyddol newydd, am natur eu cwricwlwm ac am strwythur y neuaddau dysg. Dysgwn fod tua phedwar cant o Gymry wedi astudio yn y neuaddau hynny a bod cynifer ag ugain o’n cyd-wladwyr wedi’u penodi yn benaethiaid yno, a rhestrir rhai fel Thomas Wallensis, Ioan Gwent, Roger o Gonwy ac abad Mynachlog Nedd, sef Leision ap Thomas, a wnaeth enw iddynt eu hunain yno. Mae enwau’r ail bennod, ar adeg gynhyrfus y Dadeni Dysg a’r Diwygiad Protestannaidd, yn fwy cyfarwydd: William Salesbury, Siôn Prys, Gruffydd Robert (a arhosodd yn driw i’r hen ffydd), John Davies Mallwyd ac eraill. Dyma pryd, yn 1571, y sefydlodd Hugh Price o Aberhonddu Goleg Iesu, gweithred eithriadol arwyddocaol yn hanes Cymru o’r cyfnod modern cynnar ymlaen. Ac yntau’n arbenigwr academaidd cydnabyddedig ar y genhedlaeth honno, does dim rhyfedd fod calon yr awdur yn cynhesu wrth adrodd camp y rhai hyn: ‘Mae’n gwbl debygol mai profiad Rhydychen a agorodd lygaid y Cymry i’r posibilrwydd o gydnabod haeddiannau’r Gymraeg,' meddai, gan gofio ple Salesbury: ‘Mynnwch ddysg yn eich iaith’. Yn y tair pennod arall sonnir am effaith y Rhyfeloedd Cartref ar y sefydliad, lle bu Cymry da ar ddwy ochr y brwydro, am gyfraniad rhai fel Edward Lhuyd a Thomas Pennant i wyddoniaeth yn ogystal ag i ddysg a diwylliant, am hirlwm y ddeunawfed ganrif, gan nodi effaith bellgyrhaeddol Deddf Unffurfiaeth 1662 a gadwodd Ymneilltuwyr allan o’r sefydliad am ddwy ganrif. Nid bod hynny wedi golygu pall ar weithgareddau’r Cymry a fu yno, fel y dengys y cyfeiriadau at Ellis Wynne o’r Lasynys, Goronwy Owen, Howell Harris (a arhosodd yno am wythnos yn unig), a’r beirdd Evan Evans a John Blackwell, sef ‘Ieuan Fardd’ ac ‘Alun’. Cwbl briodol oedd gorffen yr hanes trwy gyfeirio at waith nodedig y to disglair hwnnw a gynhwysai O. M. Edwards, John Puleston Jones a T. E. Ellis ac a sefydlodd Gymdeithas Dafydd ap Gwilym. ‘Achubwyd ni fel pentewynion o’r tân gan y Dafydd,' meddai un a fu yno. ‘Credaf i bawb ohonom dderbyn mwy o les ysbrydol a meddyliol yn y Dafydd nag mewn dosbarth yn y Brifysgol.’ Efallai nad un a achubwyd o’r tân mo’r Dr Brinley Jones, ond dengys sêl y gwir grediniwr, sêl sydd wedi para am oes gyfan. Mae ei frwdfrydedd yn heintus o hyd, fel y dengys y gyfrol ddifyr a gwybodus hon.
