About the Book

George W. Romney was a remarkable person. As Chairman of American Motors Corporation from 1954-1962 he saved that company from sure destruction and led it to its greatest success. He later became the most popular governor in Michigan history, a Republican stalwart beloved in a Democratic state. He ran for the presidency in 1967 and served as Secretary of HUD in the first Nixon administration before leaving over concerns about the president. More than a mere list of accomplishments, he also lived a romantic, heroic life. While still a child his family was chased out of their home in Mexico, becoming homeless refugees living in poverty. Even after the family reestablished itself in the United States they lived a hand-to-mouth existence, but Romney never lost hope. He believed that in America anyone could rise above their humble origins and accomplish anything they wanted to. He went from being a farmhand and carpenter to becoming the most famous CEO of his era. Seen as a steady, wholesome sort, he rashly quit college to win the hand of a beautiful Hollywood starlet he loved intensely. In this book youll learn the story of one of the most remarkable men of the 20th-century, a man who combined sheer moral force with hard-driving determination to succeed. Honest, truthful, hard-working and decent, Romney was the sort of person who comes along rarely, and leaves us too soon. His type sets the standard by which others are judged. And for that we can be grateful.

Review :
Patrick Foster's biography of my father George Romney chronicles the compelling power of determination in his path from poverty to national acclaim. Overcoming many setbacks and defeats through drive, zeal and faith in the right, George Romney became an iconic 20th century figure in business, politics and volunteerism. I very much enjoyed Foster's new book- well done! --Mitt Romney, American politician and businessman, 2012 U.S. Republican Party nominee for President of the United States (09/07/2017) George Romney was a pillar of strength and a tireless advocate for American Motors in its early days. He was determined to see it thrive in the face of daunting challenges. Pat Foster understands that kind of devotion. He has been just as zealous in keeping AMC's memory alive for years. This book is a fortunate meeting of story and storyteller. --John Biel, Collectible Automobile (11/30/2016) I believe Pat Foster knows more about AMC than almost anyone on the planet! That perspective makes him ideal to write about George Romney, since American Motors was one of the most important and pivotal periods in Romney's career. --William R. Chapin, president, Automotive Hall of Fame (11/30/2016) Pat Foster is to automotive history what David McCulloch is to presidential history: both create compelling narratives by bringing their principals to life, carrying out thorough research, and treating history with integrity. --Mitt Romney (11/30/2016) Pat Foster's wealth of knowledge goes deep on the subject and his usual insightfulness makes this an engaging read. --Angelo Van Bogart, editor, Old Cars Weekly, New York Times automobile editor 1994-2014 (11/30/2016)
