Los cátaros o albigenses fue un movimiento religioso-gnóstico que se propagó, a partir del siglo X, por Europa a través de las rutas comerciales, originando un intercambio de ideas renovadoras que afectarán a aquella sociedad cerrada y, al emerger de las sombras. Se preguntarán ¿Si Dios es bueno y creo el mundo y al hombre, cómo puede permitir que ocurran cosas malas e injustas?Su doctrina estaba basada en la existencia de dos principios supremos (dualismo): el Bien y el Mal, siendo el Demiurgo Bueno el creador de lo invisible y el Demiurgo Malo, el de la materia, negando por tanto la existencia de un único Dios; de igual modo negaban el dogma de la Trinidad. Su concepto de la creación difería de la doctrina católica al creer que los ángeles y el hombre carecían de libre albedrío, y por tanto pecaron. Su doctrina alentó la libertad del hombre, alcanzando la gloria mediante el conocimiento y la perfección, y no a través de la fe en Dios. Admitiendo, como únicos libros, el Nuevo Testamento y el Evangelio de Juan.La novela está estructurada en dos partes muy diferenciadas: la primera discurre por tierras del "Midi" francés, Occitania; la segunda en Navarra, "Valdorba", introduciéndonos en el mundo de aquellos "buenos hombres" y de los Perfectos, en su peregrinar por tierras occitanas; sus miedos, pensamientos, deseos..., inquietudes. Auxiliados por señores feudales y algunos jerarcas católicos..., en ocasiones por el Temple acogiéndoles en sus Casas y Encomiendas, ayudándoles a huir..., y la conducta en Tierra Santa de las huestes cristianas....Cuando la situación del catarismo se hizo insostenible, debido a las persecuciones, iniciaron una diáspora. La llegada al reino de Navarra (Valdorba), fue un bálsamo para los protagonistas, disfrutando de paz y tranquilidad, lugar idóneo para ocultar "la secreta promesa cátara y templaria" entre sus recovecos valles y templos románicos, cargados de misterio, como la cripta de la iglesia de San Miguel de Orísoain; de la Asunción de Olleta o la de San Pedro de Etxano. Misterios que algunos serán revelados por el maestro cantero, otros permanecerán ocultos preservándolos de sus enemigos.
