About the Book

The story begins with a heated game of Bid Whist, with Lee getting the final bid and winning the game by running a 'Boston' on his buddies, Waldo and Oliver, while talking trash all the way. Bid Whist is a card game that has evolved from the game of Whist that originated in the country of Turkey where the British adopted it and through slavery brought it to the United States. Through the years the game has become a mainstay in the Black community popularized by the Pullman Porters on the U.S. railroad transportation system. This story follows the misadventures of this Bid Whist playing, trash talking, womanizing, airplane hating, semi-atheistic, computer consultant from Oxnard, CA, on his way to Montgomery, AL to work on a faulty computer system, and possibly find some female companionship. The 737 airliner that he is traveling on hits a pocket of turbulence that makes him start 'scream praying' as the plane splits in half. He and his seat neighbor, Mary, are thrown from the plane as it splits in half and they fall to the Earth, crashing through the forest trees and landing, alive, still in their seats, in the snow-covered mountains. After the crash, he and Mary, both badly injured, find a cave for shelter. Mary succumbs to her injuries after telling Lee that God will provide a way, which he sarcastically dismisses. Alone in the middle of nowhere, he finds himself the only survivor of the crash and must find his way through the mountain wilderness of Arizona to get home. He must deal with the elements, an encounter with a grizzly bear, wild boars, wolves, starvation, and his injuries to survive, his only weapon is a tree branch used as a crutch. He stumbles onto bank robbers hiding their loot in the forest and manages to hide without them detecting him. His will to survive as he walks through the snowy mountains, forest, and desert towards Phoenix is augmented by a spiritual presence he eventually recognizes.
