About the Book

This one-stop reference is a perfect resource for anyone interested in the North and South Poles, whether their interest relates to history, wildlife, or the geography of these regions in the news today. Global warming, a hot topic among scholars of geography and science, has led to increased interest in studying the earth's polar ice caps, which seem to be melting at an alarming rate. This accessible, two-volume encyclopedia lays a foundation for understanding global warming and other issues related to the North and South Poles. Approximately 350 alphabetically arranged, user-friendly entries treat key terms and topics, important expeditions, major figures, territorial disputes, and much more. Readers will find information on the explorations of Cook, Scott, Amundsen, and Peary; articles on humpback whales, penguins, and polar bears; and explanations of natural phenomena like the Aurora Australis and the polar night. Expedition tourism is covered, as is climate change. Ideal for high school and undergraduate students studying geography, social studies, history, and earth science, the encyclopedia will provide a better understanding of these remote and unfamiliar lands and their place in today's world.

Review :
Antarctica and the Arctic Circle covers a wide range of topics applicable to research in the natural sciences, applied sciences, social sciences, and humanities, making it a useful resource for high school and undergraduate libraries. This two-volume set containing 350 alphabetically ordered entries signed by contributors from many fields is an excellent addition to the field of polar studies. . . . [It] also belongs in libraries of all types that maintain Arctic or Antarctic collections. It also will be of value for homeschoolers with interests concerning the polar regions. Summing Up: Recommended. All students through researchers/faculty; general readers. Overall, this is a worthy and information rich work, with very readable entries strongly linked with cross-referencing and additional reference recommendations. The coverage of the topic is excellent, with the writing successfully straddling the tricky divide between factual and engaging for the majority of the entries. The clarity of the text will doubtless allow a wide range of readership to access and engage with the subject area. . . . Antarctica and the Arctic Circle is a reference text that would equally benefit both academic and public libraries where geographic topics are in need of support. For the price it is a densely packed and rich text . . . [it] would be a worthy addition to stock, likely to prove a popular and engaging work across a very broad readership.
