About the Book

During her lifetime, critics disparaged Emily Carr's paintings and galleries considered her style too "new" for the current taste. Since then, however, she has become one of Canada's best-loved artists, with fans across the country and around the world. Her unique perspective and soulful representations are an icon in Canadian art, her work recognized for its sophistication and appreciated as a passionate homage to the West Coast's natural environment and early cultures. Each of these works represents a moment in Carr's development, both artistic and personal: from her early works in France, where she learned what it meant to be an artist, to her late works painted in the deep of old growth forests, where she would camp by herself for months at a time. In Emily Carr 2005 we present a selection of paintings from the rich legacy of a remarkable artist.
