About the Book

--Scorpio Rising is the final title in the Queer Film Classics series of monographs on classic LGBTQ films. The series, edited by Thomas Waugh and Matthew Hays, which had always planned to end 10 years after its launch in 2009. The most popular titles in the series include Paris Is Burning, Female Trouble, and Death in Venice. --Scorpio Rising is a short film (30 minutes long) directed by Kenneth Anger, the avant garde director and writer who has produced some 40 films since 1937. His films often combined surrealism with plots featuring homosexuality and the occult. He was one of the first openly gay filmmakers in the US, and in fact released many gay-themed films before homosexuality was legal. He is also well known as the author of the cult underground book Hollywood Babylon, which detailed salacious Hollywood scandals; the book remains a classic, and recently inspired Karina Longworth's popular new podcast You Must Remember This, which revisits some of the scandals featured in the book. Martin Scorsese, John Waters, and David Lynch are among the directors who have cited Anger as an influence. (Anger is now ninety-one and a well-known recluse.) --Scorpio Rising, which marked Anger's return to film after a 10-year hiatus, is notable for its plot (about a gang of gay Nazi bikers preparing for a race), its absence of dialogue, and it's entirely rock'n'roll soundtrack. It is considered a classic of American experimental film, alongside Jack Waters' Flaming Creatures, released around the same time. Its sexual content and nudity was considered notorious; when it premiered in Hollywood, the vice squad raided the theater and seized the print. The case went all the way to the California Supreme Court, when it was finally deemed fit to release. --R.L. Cagle teaches media and cinema studies at the University of Illinois College of Media in Urbana, IL. He has a special interest in Korean and East Asian cinema. He was motivated to write about Scorpio Rising because of his personal interest in the work of Kenneth Anger and his belief that the film, while a cult classic, has been largely forgotten by the queer community which inspired it.
