About the Book

And what will we spy in the sky so high? Now that our intrepid explorers are finished their grand sailing adventure (We'll All Go Sailing, 2001), they are ready to take off again in this attention-grabbing sequel. This time the three friends take to the sky and count whatever they see, from helicopters to bats and everything in between. And when they are done, they'll tell the story of their exciting trip as they invite everyone along on the next ride. Another brilliant picture book for the primary audience. Young toddlers will love the colours and simple, recognizable images. Easy gatefolds invite little ones to open up each page. And older preschoolers will count along as the sky gets more and more crowded with airborne delights. Maggee Spicer and Richard Thompson's spirited text won't have to be read many times before it's memorized. Artist Kim La Fave repeats his wildly colourful primary style, which debuted in We'll All Go Sailing and earned him a nomination for the Governor General's Literary Award for Children's Literature, Illustration. This multipurpose book will once again appeal to a wide range: from ready-to-talk to ready-for-school.

Kim LaFave: Award-winning illustrator Kim LaFave has illustrated many books for children including Big Ben, We'll All Go series and the early readers Emma's Emu, Andrew's Magnificent Mountain of Mittens and Andrew - Catch That Cat!. Review :
"[Kim] LaFave was nominated for a Governor General's Award for his illustrations in We'll All Go Sailing, and his work here is equally distinguished. The colour combinations are very striking, such as the royal purple shadow of the "prowling owl" set against the bright red of the "sunset sky." LaFave's textured art technique makes the images seem to leap off the page. These bold, energetic illustrations keep pace with the rollicking text. As in Thompson and Spicer's previous collaboration, this book offers many opportunities for reader participation. Children love the drama of opening the flap to reveal the hidden answers. Parents, teachers and librarians will find this book ideal for introducing elementary concepts, such as colour recognition, counting and matching shapes. But most importantly, as the children in my storytime can attest, the story is great fun." -- CM Magazine"Each page is a different colour reflecting the time of day or weather - purple for the storm dark sky, for example. And each page has a gatefold which when opened reveals the answer to the question 'what will we spy?' LaFave's cartoon-like illustrations and bold colour add to the sense of derring-do of the three companions on the hot-air balloon adventure." -- Books in Canada "The purpose of this lighthearted tale is to provide an entertaining counting book, showcasing the numbers one to ten. The text is repetitive and simple which is the best format for counting books. The format is designed to allow the child to participate in the fun. One can never have too many counting books and this one is a nice addition to your collection." -- ResourceLinks
