" ...Atticus avait vingt ans quand commença la guerre de Marius et de Sylla. Il vit de près les proscriptions et faillit en être victime; le tribun Sulpitius, l'un des principaux chefs du parti populaire, qui était son parent, fut tué, après la victoire de Sylla, avec ses partisans et ses amis, et comme Atticus le fréquentait beaucoup, il courut alors quelques risques. Les contemporains ont raconté quelle émotion et quel effroi saisirent les honnêtes gens de Rome au spectacle de ces premières proscriptions. On avait vu jusque-là des citoyens tués dans les émeutes populaires et pendant l'emportement de la lutte; mais on ne connaissait pas encore ces massacres après la victoire, discutés et réglés d'avance, ordonnés de sang-froid, exécutés régulièrement et comme une consigne. Cette sorte de discipline et d'ordre, cette apparence cruelle de légalité, les rendaient plus odieux encore et plus effrayants. Qu'on juge de l'effet qu'ils devaient produire sur un jeune homme qui voyait ainsi périr d'un coup ses protecteurs et ses parents, et qui n'était pas sans crainte pour lui-même ! Ce premier spectacle décida de toute sa vie. Comme il était, malgré son âge, un esprit ferme et prudent, il ne se laissa pas abattre: il réfléchit et raisonna. S'il avait eu jusque-là quelques velléités d'ambition politique et la pensée de chercher les honneurs, il y renonça sans peine en voyant de quel prix il fallait quelquefois les payer. Il comprit qu'une république où l'on pouvait impunément donner de pareils exemples était perdue, et qu'en périssant elle risquait d'entraîner avec elle ceux qui l'auraient servie. Il résolut donc de se tenir loin des affaires, et toute sa politique consista désormais à se faire une situation sûre, en dehors des partis, à l'abri des dangers..."
